About Raman Frey

I speak, write, and bring communities
together for meaningful conversations
"How might we cooperate at scale, coordinate our efforts and shape our own behaviors to create a more just and equitable world? What if we carefully built the incentives that in turn shape us, the nudges which influence our everyday habits and choices?

Imagine new regenerative economies that nudge us towards equilibrium. Imagine reinventing ideas of ownership, access, liberty and self-determination. What do we want to incentivize?"
For the last 19 years, Raman Frey has built companies and communities in the Bay Area, bringing people together around meaningful conversations about art, technology, religion, politics and philosophy.

He’s started businesses and served on the boards of a variety of organizations. As an event producer, public speaker, moderator and interviewer, Raman thrives off of improvisation. The ideal of civil discourse, amongst people with contrasting points of view, is how he believes real progress begins.

His first book manuscript, Mutineers: A Beginner's Guide to Incentive System Design is currently under revision. ISD is thinking differently and comprehensively about how we shape our own and one anothers’ behaviors and designing systems that guide those behaviors in desired directions, particularly our choices as participants in an economy.  ISD seeks to propagate greater human equality, restrained production and consumption, regeneration and equilibrium in natural systems at scale.

As of spring, 2020, Raman serves in advisory capacities for a number of stealth and launched startups, including New Age Meats, Better Humans and Lohika.

In 2012 he founded Good People Dinners, a Bay Area community that fosters substantive conversations, usually over food and drink. These dinners, corporate salons, overnights and retreats bring together professional chefs and speakers on a wide range of topics. GP Dinners has produced over 200 events and counting.

Raman was a founding partner of The Bureau, a benefit corporation, advisory and startup accelerator operating at the intersection of Distributed Ledger Technologies and ESG (environmental, social and governance) impact. In 2018, the Bureau launched their Dispatch protocol, an enterprise ready DLT, reverse compatible with Ethereum.

He has written for HBR, authored books on art and currently posts with some regularity on Medium.

An avid traveler, mountaineer, scuba diver, and amateur chef, Raman hosts dinners for friends at his home as often as he can.
"Raman is an impressively dynamic thinker and conversationalist. I hired him to help set the vision, brand, and marketing strategy for my startup. He over-delivered. Raman is next-level intelligent, articulate, and focused. And equally as important, he’s authentic, funny, and kind. I would rehire Raman and recommend him to any person or company as an advisor, partner, hire, and friend."
Drew Mohoric, Founder and CEO of www.betterhumans.xyz
“Raman has one of the most versatile and curious minds I’ve ever encountered and is a gravitational center for some of the most brilliant and thoughtful people I’ve met in the Bay Area. His writing is dense, substantive and sometimes full of revelations, glimpses beyond the horizon of what’s possible.”
— Jodi Halpern, MD, PhD is Professor of Bioethics and Medical Humanities, UC Berkeley
“Raman is a true inspiration, and a cherished mentor. We’ve worked side-by-side, and I’m constantly awestruck at his ability to connect deeply with people, and uncover the essence of crucial moments. As community-builder he is unparalleled. Raman sets the bar for integrity.”
— Chikodi Chima, Founder of Moonshot Media
“Leave your business cards and your cell phones behind, and talk with good people about things that matter. It takes an extraordinary person to make this more than just a good idea, but something that actually works.”
— Mark Lemley, Professor at Stanford Law, Co-Founder at Lex Machina
